DIY Instant Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of my favorite breakfasts. It's filling and healthy - you get some whole grains in and fiber. However, I don't usually have much time in the mornings; and by the time I get out all the ingredients and cook it for 2 minutes, I'm usually running late. Instant oatmeal packets would be nice if they weren't so expensive and didn't have so much sugar and salt in them. So I started making my own instant oatmeal packets. All you need is a few zip lock bags, quick oats, cinnamon (or spice of your choice), and a few toppings like fruit or nuts. (Please excuse the quality of the pictures - I had to use my phone...)

I love making my own, because I can literally add whatever I want - I can customize the flavor and the nutrition. Today I used walnuts, craisins, and Tupperware's Vanilla Cinnamon (I'm a little obsessed with Tupperware if you can't tell). I usually use blueberries and stick these in the freezer, but I didn't have any so I used craisins.

1/3 cup quick oats, 1 heaping tablespoon of a couple toppings (I used walnuts and craisins) and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon (I like lots of spice, so you might want to cut it back to 1/4 teaspoon). You could also add a little brown sugar if you want it sweeter. Honey is also an option, but you would have to wait to add it when you cook it. I use fruit because I think that sweetens it enough.

Put it all in a zip lock bag!

In 5 minutes, you have breakfast for the next week all ready! I usually stick them in the freezer to keep them fresher, but you wouldn't have to. When you are ready to use, just add 2/3 cup water or skim milk and microwave for 2 minutes!

Enjoy hitting the snooze button a couple extra times! ;)
